Chapter 11
Mack held him close as they walked to his apartment door. This was it. Would they or wouldn’t they? As Clay took out his keys, Mack grabbed his wrist gently and turned him. “No kiss goodnight?”
“I’d frankly kiss you any time of day or night, but don’t you want to come in?”
Mack sighed, and leaned a shoulder against a door. A gesture that Clay thought may convey that he wanted to, but was blocking himself from. “I would love to. More than you can know, but I’m trying here, not to move things so fast that we get swept up in the sexual part of it, and not get to know each other first. I’d like…I’d like there to be no surprises for either of us if we eventually decide to give a relationship a go.”
“Wow. How fucking mature of you,” he joked.
Mack leaned in and kissed him quickly. “I am over fifty.”
“How honest of you, but contradictory. Here, you have surprised me all day. How about you let me surprise you? Come in. Stay for a while and we can continue our conversation. I’ll make coffee. I will surprise you with being the first man in your vicinity that won’t try to get in your pants.”
“Hmm, not sure I like that.”
Clay laughed and watched him move from the door, allowing Clay to open it. When they went inside, they saw the candles, the flowers on the coffee table, long stemmed roses lying out all over it. Music was playing, and Brett was there, rushing out of the kitchen along with Bennett.
As Brett pushed past them, he explained, “They made me.”
Clay’s jaw hung as the two left and Mack was chuckling. “They left no stone unturned.”
“I guess not! And I further guess that they expect this romantic setting to move us to the next step.”
“After one date, is sex the next step?”
Clay was dumbstruck. “I don’t know. But…even with this, I do believe I can keep my hands off of you.”
They closed the door behind them and Clay went to the kitchen, ignoring the wine that was open on the counter with two pristine glasses waiting to be filled. They’d had enough wine, and his inhibitions were definitely lowered, but he wanted this night to be about so much more than sex, so he started a pot of coffee and took two cups down while he called, “Find a radio station with a little less bump and grind, will you?”
Laughing, Mack asked, “Hip hop? Some country twang?”
When the coffee started dripping, Clay leaned in the doorway and offered, “How about soft rock? Classic rock. Something like that.”
He found the perfect station and sat on the couch while Clay watched. Mack picked up a rose and brought it to his face to smell it, closing his eyes as he did. Clay felt a moan coming up through him that he wouldn’t let escape. He didn’t want to break the moment and not be able to observe Mack unnoticed.
Silver through his dark hair.
